Toronto Blue Jays Make Ill-Advised Trade for David Price

Sports

Today the Toronto Blue Jays announced a blockbuster trade. They are getting strikeout ace from the Detroit Tigers, David Price, in exchange for three prospects Daniel Norris, Matt Boyd, and Jairo Labourt.

I admittedly don’t follow baseball much, but I am cognitive enough to see that this is a stupid trade for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Credit to general manager Alex Anthopoulos for “going for it”. But the last trade I called as dumb as this was when the Oakland Athletics traded for rental Jon Lester.

Yes, Blue Jays fans. David Price is thirty years old and highly unlikely to stay here. Unless the Blue Jays make him close to the highest paid player in the league which would further cripple their franchise.

Right now they are barely a wild card team and made two moves in man attempt to go for it. How many times have we heard the Jays doing this in the last few years? R.a Dickey count? I’ve lost count.

Hell, the Detroit Tigers had a squad that would make George Steinbrenner jealous when they received David Price back in 2013-2014 or so and even they couldn’t make it far.

I’m not sold on them being champions nor making the playoffs. Nor am I sold that he even re-signs after the season.

This is risky, but hey, you don’t score if you don’t shoot, right?

What’s Up With the Detroit Tigers?

Sports

For a team that is ranked fifth in payrolls by team (probably much higher now that they took on David Price’s contract) and with such a star studded lineup, you’d think they would have not only won a few world series already but also be a no brainer to make the postseason this year. Anything short of the world series is a bust for this team.

But they aren’t even in place to be a wild card team (yet). They are second in their division behind the Kansas City Royals and now behind the Seattle Mariners in a wild card spot.

Quite embarrassing for a team with that payroll and star power. The Yankees and Phillies have higher payrolls and aren’t in the playoff picture really but let’s be honest, they don’t have the talent the Detroit Tigers do.

Miggy Cabrera who is an MVP candidate every year, Martinez, Hunter, the list goes on. They just picked up David Price to make their pitching rotation scary for the post season yet it isn’t.

I still say this team makes the playoffs, they are too talented not to. If they don’t I will gladly point and laugh at them. Like I said, this team should have won a few world series already by now.
